Our Services
The Society of Heritage Owners NSW is a volunteer community based organsiation made up of owners of:
-
nominated,
-
pending or
-
current
heritage listed properties in NSW.
We primarily aim to assist and support the overwhelming majority of owners who are heritage listed and experience local Council heritage problems.
Property owners with NSW state or Federal heritage listing problems have a far more complex set of issues and heritage structures to deal with. In SoHONSW's opinion, heritage listings at the State or Federal level tend to be more genuine in comparison to the farce that is NSW local government heritage listings. We hasten to add this is not always the case, but certainly they tend to be more competently researched and at least in recent times with genuine consultation and input from the owner, in comparison to the open slather, abusive, highly subjective, and unprofessional heritage methods demonstrably favoured by local Councils in NSW. NSW Council heritage listings are often likely to fail our tests for validity appearing on our Heritage Rorts web page.
At this point in SoHONSW's development we are not able to offer much needed assistance, support or advice to those with non-Council NSW heritage listings.
SoHONSW specialises in NSW heritage listings. NSW is where we are based and where our most intensive research and lobbying is done. Nevetheless, we recognize the importance of giving heritage property owners throughout Australia a voice.
Our limited volunteer resources mean we can only cover with NSW with the most up-to-date and comprehensive information available for affected owners, but note some of the issues and problems we identify are equally applicable to other Australiann jurisidctions. In that sense we provide a useful general information source for affected owners.
SoHONSW is increasingly receiving enquiries from affected owners from outside NSW. We intend to add dedicated pages for each state and Territory in Australia from 2010 onwards. If anyone affected owners from those states is interested in assisting us more closely monitor and critique heritage issues in their home state, please email us relevant information at sohonsw@gmail.com and we will review and then include whatever we can use on those soon to be developed non-NSW web page.
In 2008 SoHONSW established , edited and updated our publicly available web site. We also focused on lobbying to have the NSW Heritage Act reformed to reflect many of the criticisms we and others have repeatedly made about its operation for the past 30 years.
In 2010 SoHONSW intends to offer affected property owners who are interested in more detailed material including earlier updates, alerts and assessments a membership package. SoHONSW membership will cost the very reasonable fee of $50 for calander year membership.
The application to join will be added to the webpage in early 2010.
The more owners who join, the greater our ability to lobby on owners behalf to ahieve the positive, incentive based and lawful heritage listing system which respects owners rights.
